Mobile TV Forum Newsletter: DVB-H launches in Taiwan

October 2007

Hello and welcome to the October issue of Mobile TV Forum Newsletter!

DVB-H launches in Taiwan

Taiwan is the latest Asian country to roll out DVB-H based mobile broadcast service. The launch covers three networks operating in Taipei, Kaohsung, and Tainan areas.

During its launch phase the service is free for consumers. In conjunction to the service launch, Nokia has started shipping the Nokia N77 DVB-H device in Taiwan. The Nokia N77 ships with a suggested retail price of NT $19,900 (approximately US $600).

France sets roadmap for DVB-H

The 2008 Olympic games are becoming a milestone for mobile TV deployments. France's regulatory authority, CSA (Conseil superieur de l'audiovisuel), has announced that it's aiming to grant mobile TV transmission licenses with a schedule that allows services to be launched in the summer of 2008.

CSA is preparing a call for applications for DVB-H mobile TV transmission licenses. The call is expected to be published during this month. CSA will allocate places on the band spectrum for 15 - 17 mobile TV channels. In its consultation earlier this year, CSA received 47 individual industry submissions, reflecting the industry interest in mobile TV.

Nokia Video Center complements mobile broadcast viewing

Nokia recently announced its new content partners for the Nokia Video Center concept. Nokia Video Center was launched in February of this year with Reuters and YouTube content. Now CNN, IBM, Jamba, Sony Pictures, Rooftop Comedy, ROK and Versaly Entertainment will start delivering content for as well.

Nokia Video Center is an application for on-demand video viewing using mobile devices. On-demand viewing complements broadcast television content by offering a new media choice for consumers and making it possible for viewers to choose the most convenient time to watch their favorite programs.

Nokia Video Center is a native S60 platform application. It takes the benefits of RSS feed specification, and supports content reception over broadcast, cellular, or WiFi networks.

Nokia Video Center ships currently with the Nokia N95 and N95 8GB multimedia computers. "In the future, Nokia Video Center will be available on the majority of Nokia Nseries devices," says director Torsti Tenhunen of Nokia Multimedia.

November's key industry events are the Casbaa Convention, to be held in Hong Kong, and the Mobile Asia Congress, taking place in Macau. Stay tuned for the latest mobile TV news!
