August 2007

Mobile TV is moving forward rapidly in Asia. In conjunction with the Broadcast Asia event held this June in Singapore, Malaysian operator MiTV announced their mobile broadcast launch plans. In Mays newsletter we reported on the launch of a commercial trial service of Indias Doordarshan. Commercial mobile broadcast TV services are already up and running in Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam.

Malaysian mobile broadcast service to start this year

During the second half of this year, mobile broadcast services will become available for Malaysian consumers. The mobile communications subsidiary of multimedia and communications company MiTV will launch a mobile TV service based on DVB-H technology.

The service will start with a six-channel soft launch. The commercial service will start in November in the Klang Valley area, with more cities to follow later.

Nokia Siemens Networks will be in charge of delivering the DVB-H network solution and providing maintenance of the network on a turnkey basis.

Stay tuned for further details on this story in upcoming newsletters!

Vietnamese mobile TV in a nutshell

Vietnamese operator VTC launched a DVB-H based mobile broadcast service in December last year. The service is currently on air in the Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City areas.

The basic service comprises seven TV channels and two radio channels. The TV channels include four domestic channels a general channel, a film channel, a sports channel, and a channel containing economic and entertainment programming. In addition, there is also a BBC news channel, MTV music channel, and Fashion TV channel. This basic package can be complemented with a premium package consisting of one extra local channel and two more radio channels.

The service requires a registration fee of approximately 30 USD. The monthly charge for the basic service is 6 USD and the premium channels cost 2 USD a month on top of the basic subscription. The service charges are paid by ordering pre-paid cards or by SMS.

Nokia and Samsung DVB-H handsets are available for Vietnamese consumers to take advantage of these new services.

First OMA BCAST interoperability tests held

First OMA BCAST interoperability tests held

In June mobile TV technology interoperability moved a step forward as the first OMA BCAST test camp took place in Berlin. Test camps are events where representatives from various and also competing companies gather to test the interoperability of their products in a real-world-like environment.

The Berlin test camp was arranged by the industry organization bmcoforum. The main scope of the camp was to test applications taking advantage of bmcoforums so-called implementation profile for the OMA BCAST specification. (The OMA BCAST specification describes the implementation of mobile TV services such as DVB-H.)

Ten server and twelve client implementations from a total of 21 companies were tested. Among the testing companies were CoreMedia, Discretix, Expway, Irdeto, LG Electronics, Envivio, Netzwert, Nextreaming, Nokia, Nokia Siemens Networks, NXP Semiconductors, Panasonic, Rohde und Schwarz, RRD, Silicon & Software Systems, SafeNet, Samsung, Sidsa, Tata Elxsi, Thomson, T-Systems Media & Broadcast, Udcast, and WRG

The Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) is also going to include mobile TV interoperability testing in their Test Fest program later this year.
