120 million mobile TV viewers by 2012

November 2007

Hello and welcome to the November issue of Mobile TV Forum Newsletter! During the last couple of weeks several research companies have released reports concerning mobile TV and mobile video.

Juniper estimates 120 million users and $6.6bn spending by 2012

Juniper Research

Juniper Research expects the number of mobile TV viewers to reach 120 million by 2012. The annual consumer spending on mobile broadcast services would exceed $6.6 billion by that time with viewers from over 40 countries. According to Juniper, DVB-H will become the dominant transmission standard. There will also be streamed TV services that carry niche and minority channel content on air to complement the mobile broadcast transmissions.

Juniper Research also reports that subscription and pay-per-view charges will account for the majority of mobile TV revenue streams. However, the proportion of advertising income will rise and play an important role in complementing mobile TV revenues.

Juniper believes there are two key factors that will help to determine the success of mobile broadcast TV: spectrum availability and the supply of mass-market mobile broadcast handsets. Regulators providing optimal UHF frequencies would also facilitate the rollout of mobile broadcast services.

ABI Research expects full-length programming

ABI Research says that appropriate [mobile TV and video] technologies are now in place and expects the mobile TV industry to take off in earnest, once business model, distribution, and content issues are resolved. The research company believes that the major top-ranked channels will follow a broadcast distribution model.

In their research ABI has also found a correlation between good technical quality and longer viewing times. As research director Michael Wolf puts it: “Our latest research shows that people are actually watching mobile TV in their bedrooms, for 40 minutes at a time”.

M:Metrics finds big growth in mobile video viewing

According to the research company M:Metrics, in August 2.7 million U.S. mobile subscribers tuned in for programmed video content (that is other than user-generated or viral content). This figure is up 28% since January. The most popular content was music videos (35%), movie trailers (29%), and “information, sports and news” (26%). 15% of the viewers watched full-length TV episodes or feature films.

The host countries for the UEFA EURO 2008 European football championship, Austria and Switzerland, will be providing mobile broadcast transmissions by the start of the tournament.

In Switzerland, the mobile broadcast transmission license was granted to Swisscom Broadcast. The company is now setting up a DVB-H network that will be available for all Swiss telecom operators. The service will be on air in the four Swiss EURO 2008 host cities – Basel, Berne, Geneva, and Zurich – by the end of May. According to the license conditions, the service shall cover 50% of the country’s population by 2012.

The Austrian regulator has allocated one multiplex for mobile broadcast transmissions. The multiplex is to carry both free-to-air and pay channels. The candidates for the mobile broadcast transmission license are to deliver their submissions by December 14th. “We are on schedule to introduce this technical innovation right in time for the start of the European Cup finals”, says Austrian minister of media, Doris Bures.
